Apparitions Across the World

From a Mexican hillside to a Japanese convent — Mary has stepped into history again and again, always with the same message: prayer, conversion, peace.

Our Lady of Guadalupe
1531 · Tepeyac Hill, Mexico

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Mary appeared four times to the indigenous convert St. Juan Diego, asking that a church be built. As proof, she filled his tilma with Castilian roses in winter — and when he opened it before the bishop, her image appeared upon the cloth. That tilma is still venerated today, undecayed after nearly five centuries. Within a decade, some nine million Aztecs were baptized.

'Am I not here, who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection?'
Our Lady of Lourdes
1858 · Lourdes, France

Our Lady of Lourdes

Mary appeared eighteen times to the fourteen-year-old St. Bernadette Soubirous in the grotto of Massabielle. She asked for penance, prayer, and the building of a chapel — and identified herself with the words, 'I am the Immaculate Conception,' four years after the dogma was defined. A miraculous spring rose where Bernadette dug; thousands of healings have been documented since.

'Penance, penance, penance. Pray to God for sinners.'
Our Lady of Fátima
1917 · Fátima, Portugal

Our Lady of Fátima

From May to October, Mary appeared six times to three shepherd children — Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta — calling for prayer of the Rosary, conversion of sinners, and consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart. On October 13, before some 70,000 onlookers including skeptical journalists, the sun spun and seemed to plunge toward the earth — the famous Miracle of the Sun.

'Pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world.'
